The Real Madrid and France forward, whose father is Cameroonian and mother is Algerian, spoke to RFI ahead of the 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony in London on October 26.
Although Mbappe was born and raised in France and has represented the country throughout his international career, he says he has never lost touch with his African roots.
"I have never cut ties with my roots, my origins," Mbappe said, explaining that African culture was an important part of his upbringing.
His connection with the continent has also been reflected in his visits and support for African football. In 2023, he travelled to Cameroon, visiting Yaounde, Douala and Djebale, where his father's family originates. He also visited schools supported by his foundation.
Mbappe has continued to maintain links with Africa, including attending the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and supporting African teams during the tournament.
Mbappe said he has consistently received a warm welcome whenever he visits Africa.
He has also spoken positively about African football, arguing that teams from the continent should not be underestimated and noting how difficult they can be to play against.
With the Ballon d'Or vote approaching, Mbappe thanked African fans and journalists for their support and said he hoped to dedicate the award to them if he wins.
Mbappe enters the race after a prolific 2025-26 season with Real Madrid. He scored 42 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions, including 25 in La Liga and 15 in the Champions League.
He also finished as the leading scorer at the 2026 World Cup with France.
Despite his success with Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, Mbappe has never won the Ballon d'Or. He is among the 30 nominees for this year's award.
For Mbappe, winning would therefore be both a major personal achievement and an opportunity to recognise the African heritage that remains an important part of his identity.
