Orlando Pirates overcome Gallants to close gap on Sundowns

The Buccaneers began brightly with in-form defender Lebone Seema heading wide from a Thapelo Mokobodi set-piece in the fifth minute, with the latter seeing his curling freekick narrowly miss the target eight minutes later.

Midfielder Simphiwe Masilela drew a save from Gallants goalkeeper Wandeu Merlin in the 26th before winger Kabelo Kgotsitsile opened his scoring account six minutes later.

Both sides could not create any more clear chances in a tense opening half as they headed into the break with Bucs leading 1-0.

The visitors looked to double their lead early in the scond half but could not find the final pass in the last third despite dominating possession.

Mokobodi forced another save from Merlin in the 65th minute before Masilela missed the target after finding himself free in the box eight minutes later.

However, in the 74th minute captain Nkosinathi Sibisi made Bahlabane Ba Ntwa pay for some ball watching to extend AmaBhakaniya's lead with a neat header following a set-piece.

Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made four changes immediately after the second goal as his side secured a well earned victory against a stubborn Marumo Gallants.

The result sees Pirates move within a point of log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played an extra fixture, while Gallants remain winless and rooted to the bottom of the table.
