Rangers coach Derek McInnes demands more Nigerian international

Fernandez has endured a difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign, struggling to match the level he produced during his impressive debut season at Ibrox.

The 25-year-old was named Rangers' Player of the Season last term and was also included in the Scottish PFA Team of the Season. His performances attracted significant interest during the summer, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Rennes and Borussia Dortmund among the clubs reportedly monitoring his situation.

However, Fernandez has come under scrutiny during Rangers' disappointing start to the new season. He was criticised following the 2-1 defeat to Jagiellonia Bialystok in the Europa League qualifiers and faced further questions after conceding a penalty in Sunday's 5-1 victory over St Mirren.

With Rangers preparing to face Jablonec in the first leg of their Europa Conference League tie at Ibrox on Thursday, McInnes has backed Fernandez and his teammates to improve.

"We're trying to help every player really to get to their best form," McInnes was quoted by The Scottish Sun as reported by Soccernet.ng.

The Rangers boss acknowledged that players could struggle to reach their best level early in a season but stressed the importance of defensive organisation and consistency.

"Every player is at a different moment, but we need to make sure we are as stingy as we can be at the back," he added.

McInnes also called on his players to take responsibility for their performances, insisting that Fernandez must work hard to regain his best form.

"Certainly, you have to have that real focus and concentration and application at your way to try to get your best performances," he said.

The Rangers boss believes the squad has enough quality and potential to improve but challenged the players to maximise their abilities.

Fernandez will now have an opportunity to respond on the pitch when Rangers take on Jablonec, with the Scottish giants aiming to secure a positive first-leg result and keep their European campaign on track.
