Relebohile Mofokeng opens up on his ideal role after Bafana's World Cup campaign

Mofokeng has often featured on the wing during his career. However, the 21-year-old believes operating behind the striker allows him to make the biggest impact.

"I think I do best in the No. 10 position," Mofokeng, who recently signed with Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise was quoted by Sportswire.

Broos has previously explained that Mofokeng possesses the creativity, vision and technical ability to thrive centrally, and the youngster agrees with the national team coach's evaluation.

The attacking midfielder was part of South Africa's historic 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, although he was an unused substitute in Bafana Bafana's opening 2-0 defeat to Mexico.

Reflecting on the tournament, Mofokeng admitted the occasion brought nerves throughout the squad, which influenced Broos' decision to deploy a defensive back-five system against the tournament co-hosts.

"It was our first World Cup and everyone was nervous. We didn't want to lose the game, so the most important thing was to defend. Mexico are a very good team with quality players, so we had to protect our goal," he said.

Despite the disappointing start, South Africa recovered to draw with Czechia before defeating South Korea to qualify for the World Cup knockout stages for the first time in the country's history.

Bafana's memorable campaign ended in the round of 16 after a narrow 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Canada, but Mofokeng believes the team improved significantly as the tournament progressed.

"If you compare our first game to our last game, you will see the difference. Our confidence improved with every match, and that helped us play much better," he added.
