Real Madrid confirmed the signing of the Spain international left-back on 15 June 2026. The 27-year-old agreed a six-year contract that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu until June 2032. The deal was reportedly worth up to 60 million euros.
Although his immediate focus remains on helping Spain in their bid for 2026 FIFA World Cup success, Cucurella has already spoken about the next chapter of his career in Madrid.
The defender revealed that new Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho played a key role in convincing him to make the move.
"When a coach like Mourinho calls you, it's something to be proud of," Cucurella told Marca. "He wrote to me and then called me. When a coach tells you directly what he thinks, it means a lot. I'm looking forward to working with him."
Cucurella acknowledged that succeeding at Real Madrid will not be easy, given the expectations that come with playing for one of the biggest clubs in world football.
"I'm in a great moment and I'm really looking forward to playing for Real Madrid," he said. "It's a great challenge. All the players are top quality and you have to perform at 100 per cent in every match because every team wants to beat Real Madrid."
The Spanish international is expected to become Madrid's first-choice left-back and is eager to play alongside Vinicius Junior on the left flank.
"I think I'll get on well with him," Cucurella said. "I don't mind doing the work behind him. As long as he stays fresh and keeps deciding matches, I'll do the dirty work."
He also praised the Brazilian winger's influence in big matches, adding: "Vinicius has shown how decisive and important he is for Real Madrid, especially in the Champions League."
Vinicius has been one of the standout stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring four goals in three group-stage matches to help Brazil top Group C. His performances have cemented him as a major contender for the Golden Boot and the tournament's best player.
