John Terry: Bafana Bafana star Mbekezeli Mbokazi a 'top player'

Mbokazi, who recently joined Chicago Fire from Orlando Pirates, has already made an impression in his debut Major League Soccer campaign and has been rewarded with a landmark selection to the MLS All-Star Game.

He becomes only the second South African ever to earn that honour, and the first to be named in the starting line-up, following Doctor Khumalo three decades ago.

He will feature alongside global stars including Lionel Messi and Son Heung-min in Charlotte on July 29, where MLS All-Stars face opponents from Liga MX.

At international level, Mbokazi is widely tipped to start at centre-back for Bafana Bafana in their World Cup opener against Mexico at Estadio Azteca. Terry has even suggested a 1-1 draw in that fixture.

"I think he's a top, top player. I think he's actually got the potential to be one of the big stars in terms of defenders and the young stars that can be a real positive coming out of that," Terry said at a virtual roundtable hosted by SuperSport.

"I really like him. I like his attitude, the mentality side of things that I see. I'm excited to see him against some bigger and better opposition as well throughout this tournament."

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has compared Mbokazi's attributes to Vincent Kompany, highlighting his formative development at Anderlecht. However, Broos previously questioned his transfer choice, arguing he should have moved directly to Europe.

Mbokazi's rise has been underpinned by standout displays at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, including a dominant outing against Egypt and Mohamed Salah, where he won all eight ground duels despite a penalty conceded by Khuliso Mudau.
