Speaking ahead of the Europa League showdown, Schuster reflected on the emotional impact of their semi-final win over Braga, which secured a historic place in the final.
"When you looked at people's faces and saw the glint in their eyes, you could feel what it meant to everybody," Schuster said. "Even before the game, there was already a feeling that something special could happen. Some people had already booked trips to Istanbul."
He added that the success has united the city in a way he has never experienced before. "The sense of support and solidarity is now even stronger than before. Football has that power to bring people together."
Schuster only began his coaching career in 2024 after making nearly 250 appearances for Freiburg as a player. In a remarkably short time, he has guided the club to a fifth-place Bundesliga finish in his debut season, a German Cup semi-final, and now a European final.
He admitted that such success was never part of his early thinking when he first earned his coaching licence in 2023. "It would have been presumptuous to think like that," he said. "I simply discovered that I enjoyed coaching and wanted to pass on knowledge. Three years later, I am in a final."
Looking ahead, Schuster stressed the importance of staying calm despite the occasion. "The danger is overloading the players with too much information. We have to keep things as routine as possible."
On the other side, Villa arrive with strong European pedigree under manager Unai Emery, who has won the competition four times, including success with Sevilla and Villarreal.
Villa also knocked out Nottingham Forest on their way to the final, while Freiburg's own journey included wins over Celta Vigo, Genk and Braga.
Freiburg's rise has also followed a series of near misses in domestic cup competitions, including a penalty shootout defeat to RB Leipzig and a late semi-final loss to VfB Stuttgart.
Now, Schuster stands one game away from the biggest moment in Freiburg's history - a European final at the Tupras Stadium in Istanbul that could change the club's future forever.
