Mayo endured a frustrating campaign after joining Chiefs on loan from Algerian club CR Belouizdad, scoring just two goals as he struggled to establish himself as a regular contributor.
Despite his difficulties, Chiefs have shown their confidence in the 25-year-old by securing his services on a permanent deal. Mayo is currently recovering from injury, but Petersen believes his confidence means he is unlikely to dwell on his disappointing campaign.
The Chiefs captain says Mayo has the personality required to bounce back whenever things do not go according to plan.
"We know Mayo's qualities from the time he played in Cape Town and when he played for Belouizdad. It showed you that the quality is there and it's normal for a player to sometimes go through a dip," Petersen said.
"The most important thing is how you pick yourself up. He's sidelined now, he's injured, but he is a good guy. He's a hard worker and he's a guy who is full of confidence."
Petersen feels Mayo's self-belief could prove important when he eventually returns to action, particularly as he looks to compete for a place in a strengthened Chiefs attack.
"For me, it's easy to pick up a guy like that because they are hardly down, whether they are doing well or not. They believe in their qualities and what they can do on the field," he added.
Mayo's versatility could also work in his favour. The former Cape Town City attacker is capable of operating as a central striker or from the wings, giving coach Fernando da Cruz another option in the final third.
However, competition for places has increased following the arrivals of Langelihle Phili and Faiz Abrahams.
With Chiefs backing Mayo with a permanent contract, Petersen believes the forward now has an opportunity to repay that faith once he returns from injury.
"Everyone knows the qualities that Mayo has and we are looking forward to him returning to the field of play," Petersen concluded.
