Yanela Mbuthuma needs fans’ love, insists Orlando Pirates coach

The 24-year-old, who joined the Buccaneers from Richards Bay FC during the off-season, has been under scrutiny during a lean spell in front of goal. Despite Pirates’ prolific scoring—11 goals in their last two matches—Mbuthuma struggled to find the net, drawing criticism on social media.

However, the tide appeared to turn during Tuesday’s 5-0 demolition of Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium. The home crowd vocally backed Mbuthuma, applauding his work rate, movement, and link-up play.

"The fans have to understand that Mbuthuma is their son, and they have to support him so that he will help the team," Ouaddou said in a post-match interview.

"He is doing a fantastic job; you see the improvement in his touches and mobility between the lines. Of course, we need goals—they will come. With the support of the fans, I’m 100 percent sure things will go right. I was really happy about the fans’ support today."

Ouaddou also highlighted the broader context of the team’s recent performances, emphasizing that their current ruthlessness is about more than just points—it’s about the tight margins in the title race.

"For ambitious teams, confidence and goal difference are crucial," he said.

"I told my boys to play every game with a strong fighting spirit until the last second. We want this mentality because we don’t want regrets at the end of the season."

Mbuthuma, with four goals and two assists in the Betway Premiership so far, has also kept Bafana Bafana international Evidence Makgopa on the bench, underscoring his tactical importance.

The Buccaneers now travel to Richards Bay FC this Friday, giving Mbuthuma a chance to shine against his former employers and end his goal drought.
