Why Tochukwu Nnadi turned down Nigeria call-up

According to Marseille-based newspaper La Provence, via Footmarseille, Chelle was in contact with Marseille's coaching staff about the possibility of involving Nnadi in Nigeria's back-to-back 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, as well as the friendly against Russia.

However, the 23-year-old preferred to focus on regaining full fitness rather than join the national team while still recovering.

Nnadi has been sidelined since suffering a tear to the outer part of his meniscus during Marseille's Ligue 1 clash against Monaco on August 30.

Although surgery could have ruled him out for several months, the midfielder opted for a conservative treatment approach centred on strengthening his thigh muscles to improve stability around the affected knee.

Before the international break, Chelle and members of Marseille's coaching staff reportedly exchanged messages several times regarding the player's potential involvement with the Super Eagles.

However, with Nnadi not yet fully fit, the decision was made to prioritise his rehabilitation in France.

That approach appears to be paying off, with the midfielder now in contention for a place in Marseille's matchday squad for Sunday's trip to Troyes.

Nnadi took another positive step in his recovery last weekend when he played 45 minutes in a friendly against Montpellier without experiencing any discomfort with the club also missing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg  and Himad Abdelli also carrying a knock.
