Newcastle boss Mathias Jaissle hails versatility of DR Congo star Yoane Wissa

Wissa has made an encouraging start to the season after a difficult first campaign at St James' Park, contributing a goal and an assist in Newcastle's opening five Premier League matches.

The DR Congo international supplied an assist in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool, operating behind Will Osula before moving further forward when the striker suffered a foot injury. He subsequently scored in the 2-0 victory over Tottenham.

Jaissle is pleased with what Wissa offers in a deeper attacking role, although he is reluctant to settle on one position for the forward.

"He can play multiple positions. He feels really comfortable also playing behind the striker. He's bringing another element into the team then," the Newcastle boss said.

"I don't want to stick and predict now his future position because I also want to have the open cards. But he's doing an amazing job as a 10 behind the striker."

Wissa has also carried his form into international football, scoring and providing an assist in DR Congo's 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. He previously scored three times at the World Cup as his country reached the knockout stages.

The 29-year-old's role could now be affected by the return of Osula, who has resumed training ahead of Monday's trip to Coventry. Their partnership was effective against Liverpool, but Jaissle has other combinations to consider.

Matias Fernandez-Pardo is another option after joining Newcastle from Lille for a reported 51 million pounds on transfer deadline day. The forward is still adapting to his new surroundings, having arrived without the benefit of a pre-season with his new teammates.
