Black Ferns Face Canada Hurdle While England Loom Large

by SuperSportBet

19 Sep 2025

The New Zealand Black Ferns face a stern test in the first Women’s World Cup semi-final this weekend while England are overwhelming favourites to beat France.
With the Rugby Championship taking a break this weekend, rugby fans will devote even more of their time and attention to the Women’s World Cup playoffs in England and the Carling Currie Cup final.
New Zealand and England are expected to win their respective semi-finals, but the big question is by how much.
The Fidelity ADT Lions were pipped for the Currie Cup title last year, with the HollywoodBets Sharks winning thanks to a late penalty.
While they go into the decider on Saturday with home advantage, they should be wary of a plucky and well-coached Suzuki Griquas side.

New Zealand Women V Canada Women

• Date: Saturday, 19 September
• Venue: Ashton Gate, Bristol
• Time: 8pm (SA Time)
• TV: SuperSport

The Springbok Women made a statement when they bossed New Zealand at the set pieces in the quarter-final, and the scores were locked 10-10 at half-time. The Black Ferns will be aiming for a more convincing first-half performance against Canada, who are among the world’s top-ranked teams and are coming off a 46-5 win against Australia. Expect the Black Ferns to prevail, but consider the +1 margin bet for Canada (1.90). The odds on a Canada win (2.10) aren’t that long either.

Fidelity ADT Lions V Suzuki Griquas

• Date: Saturday, 20 September
• Venue: Ellis Park, Johannesbug
• Time: 3pm (SA Time)
• TV: SuperSport

The Lions thumped Griquas 37-7 when the teams met in Johannesburg in the final round of the Currie Cup league phase. Since then, the Lions have gone on to thrash Sanlam Boland Cavaliers in the semi-finals, and earn the right to host the decider at Ellis Park. Griquas, who last won the Currie Cup in 1970, come into the match on the back of a 25-5 win against the Toyota Cheetahs XV. The visitors may hope for a tighter contest, where their accurate flyhalf George Whitehead can slot the winning points. The hosts will play with more ambition, though, and have the potential to win this game by more than seven points. Griquas start as 9.00 underdogs, but may finish within the +22.5 handicap (1.85).

France Women V England Women

• Date: Saturday, 20 September
• Venue: Ashton Gate, Bristol
• Time: 4:30m (SA Time)
• TV: SuperSport

France haven’t been at their best in this tournament and may struggle to live with the home team on Saturday. Les Bleues come into this playoff on the back of an 18-13 win against Ireland, while England recently beat Scotland 40-8. Unsurprisingly, France are 13.00 underdogs to win the semi-final at Ashton Gate, but the contest may be closer than most expect – and France may finish within the +22 handicap (1.95).
