Boks Line Up Georgia, Aus Brace For Lions

The Springboks should finish their mid-year programme on a high when they host Georgia this Saturday, while Australia tackle the British & Irish Lions in an intriguing Test-series opener.

The international rugby season is in full swing, and it’s hard to look past the Test series between Australia and the Lions, which kicks off in Brisbane this Saturday.

The Lions are favourites to win the series, but under the guidance of Joe Schmidt, the Wallabies may spring a surprise or two over the next three weeks, and the winning margins may be smaller than expected.

The Boks have racked up big wins against the Barbarians and Italy (twice) in recent weeks, and should add another emphatic victory to their tally when they host Georgia – who are ranked 11th in the world – in Nelspruit this Saturday.

After all the back-and-forth in the New Zealand and European media over the past few months, the All Blacks are poised to complete a 3-0 ‘Blackwash’. Coach Scott Robertson has made 10 changes to the team that won 43-17 in Wellington last week – a result that sealed the series – but the hosts should have enough class to finish off a French team that’s reached the end of a long northern-hemisphere season. The tourists start with a 17-point handicap (1.95), and will be hard-pressed to prevent an All Blacks win in excess of 20.

Australia vs Lions

  • Date: Saturday, 19 July
  • Venue: Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane
  • Time: 12pm (SA Time)

The Lions should be battle-hardened and relatively settled after playing six matches over the past three weeks. The Wallabies, on the other hand, looked desperately underdone in the narrow win over Fiji. Star forwards Taniela Tupou and Rob Valetini are unavailable due to injuries, and the hosts may struggle to live with the Lions pack in the first half this Saturday. That said. Schimdt has selected a powerful bench, and those selections may keep the game closer than expected The Lions should win, but the Wallabies’ handicap of +9 (2.00) is definitely worth a bet.

Springboks vs Georgia

  • Date: Saturday, 19 July
  • Venue: Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit
  • Time: 5:10pm (SA Time)

The Boks produced their most clinical performance of the mid-year campaign to thrash Italy 45-0 in Gqeberha last week, and clinch the series 2-0. Georgia come into this game on the back of a 34-5 loss to Ireland in Tbilisi, and a 24-20 defeat to the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein. Bok coach Rassie Erasmus has rotated his squad and given another three players their first Test caps, yet another big win is predicted – with Georgia starting as 17.00 underdogs and with a 47-point handicap (1.90). While the Boks should win this game by a comfortable margin, they will have to maintain their discipline and defensive shape to secure another victory by 45+.
