Make Or Break For WP, Sharks

by SuperSportBet

8 Aug 2025

DHL Western Province and the HollywoodBets Sharks will be hard-pressed to snap their respective losing streaks in the Carling Currie Cup this weekend.
After two rounds, a couple of front-runners for the 2025 Currie Cup title have emerged.
The Vodacom Bulls currently lead the log, after thrashing WP and the Sharks, while the Fidelity ADT Lions are in second place, having beaten the two coastal teams.
WP will be under pressure to hit back when they face Suzuki Griquas in Kimberley on Friday, while the Sharks will have a point to prove against the Toyota Cheetahs on Saturday.
The Bulls could strengthen their position at the top of the standings when hosting the Airlink Pumas on Saturday, while the Lions will be favourites when they head down to Wellington on Sunday to tackle the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers.

Suzuzki Griquas v DHL Western Province

  • Date: Friday, 8 August
  • Venue: Suzuki Stadium, Kimberley
  • Time: 3pm (SA Time)
  • TV: SuperSport

Griquas bounced back from their loss to the Pumas in round one to beat Boland in round two, and will start the coming match against WP as 1.44 favourites. After losing by 25 points to the Bulls and 21 to the Lions, WP should be a lot more competitive this week. Defence has been an issue for the Cape side, but their attack could keep them in the hunt for a losing bonus point – and with that in mind, the handicap bet of +6 (1.90) is worth exploring.

Vodacom Bulls v Airlink Pumas

  • Date: Saturday, 9 August
  • Venue: Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria
  • Time: 3pm (SA Time)
  • TV: SuperSport

The Bulls pack has been unstoppable in recent weeks, and should have the edge in the coming battle with the Pumas’ heavies. That should set the platform for yet another convincing victory, and on current form, the Pumas would do well to finish within the +28 handicap (1.85).

HollywoodBets Sharks v Toyota Cheetahs

  • Date: Saturday, 9 August
  • Venue: Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium, Clermont
  • Time: 5:10pm (SA Time)
  • TV: SuperSport

The Sharks have scored five points over the last two games, while their defence has leaked 110 points and 17 tries. They will look forward to their first home match of the campaign – even though it will be staged in the township of Clermont rather than in Durban itself – after two gruelling weeks on the highveld. Whether they can mark the occasion with a win is another story, as the Cheetahs boast threats across the park. The odds on a Sharks win (2.62) tell a story, and they could lose by more than five this Saturday.

Sanlam Boland Kavaliers v Fidelity ADT Lions

  • Date: Sunday, 10 August
  • Venue: Boland Stadium, Wellington
  • Time: 3pm (SA Time)
  • TV: SuperSport

Boland made a statement when they edged the Cheetahs 37-35 in the opening round of the tournament, and will be desperate to add another big scalp to their collection this Sunday. The Lions will be harder to contain, however, especially up front. Some may hope for another upset – Boland start as 8.00 underdogs – but it would be safer to bet on the margin and to back the Kavaliers to lose by fewer than 19 (1.90).
