Both nations will be confident of progressing even further in the tournament after reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time, adding to the intrigue of the historic fixture.
Canada fitness issues
The Canadian squad have been hit by a number of injury issues with the biggest casualty being midfielder Ismael Kone who broke his leg in the 6-0 hammering of Qatar.
Star player and captain Alphonso Davies has not featured at the tournament due to a muscle issue but could feature against the Bafana team, while defensive midfielder Stephen Eustáquio faces a late fitness test. Canada's squad depth will be tested in this clash.
In contrast, South Africa is injury-free with only Themba Zwane out due to suspension.
Return of Mokoena
Mamelodi Sundowns star Teboho Mokoena returns to boost a midfield that impressed in the recent victory over South Korea to secure progression to the knockout stage.
Hugo Broos will be thrilled to have his key and most experienced midfielder back for the all-important fixture against Canada but will have a tough time leaving out any of the starters from the win over Korea.
Mokoena will also bring more options in terms of set-piece threats and penalties if required.
Chance conversion
Bafana Bafana have scored two goals while conceding three times in their group stage matches while Canada scored eight goals and conceded on three occasions in Group B.
South Africa will have to be more clinical upfront during open play if they want to progress, with one of their goals in the tournament coming from the penalty spot.
Hugo Broos side had the most attempts in their last two matches against Czechia and South Korea but struggled to convert, which needs to change if Mzansi wants to progress.
Co-host pressure
Canada will be dealing with the expectancy of progression due being a co-hosting nation of the tournament in North America and also because of their higher FIFA ranking [32nd] compared to South Africa [54th].
This may work in Bafana Bafana's favour, as they come into this match as the underdog but could enjoy some support from the American fans, who are historical Canadian rivals.
Daytime kick-off
Most of the South African squad are plying their trade with Premier Soccer League clubs and will be used to playing their matches during the day, which is in contrast to Canadian squad who usually play in cooler conditions abroad.
This factor seemed to play a part in wearing out the South Korean side in the last group clash for Bafana and it could play a role in the Round of 32 clash, especially if the match goes into extra-time.
