Movsar Evloev strengthened his case for a UFC featherweight title shot on Saturday night, grinding out a majority decision over Lerone Murphy in a tense main event at UFC London.
Scores at the O2 Arena read 48-46, 48-46 and 47-47, reflecting a contest that swung repeatedly and remained in doubt until the final horn. Evloev’s late wrestling surge and consistent pressure were just enough to preserve his unbeaten record and his status as the No. 1 contender at 145lbs.
Evloev moved to 20-0 as a professional with his 10th straight victory in the UFC. Murphy, who entered the bout undefeated, dropped to 17-1-1 but confirmed his place among the division’s elite.
From the opening round, Evloev took the centre of the cage and advanced behind a steady jab, using kicks to the body and legs to force Murphy backwards. The Manchester featherweight stayed composed, answering with clean right hands and regular work to the midsection whenever Evloev over-committed.
Despite his well-known grappling pedigree, Evloev chose to stand for most of the first two rounds. That decision kept the action competitive. Murphy landed the sharper single shots, especially with his right hand and counters to the body, while Evloev relied on volume, forward movement and occasional body kicks to make his case with the judges.
The dynamic shifted in the third. Evloev finally looked to his wrestling, securing a takedown and briefly controlling from top position. While Murphy scrambled well and found his feet, the Russian closed the round strongly with a late flurry on the feet, likely edging the frame with his activity and cage control. Murphy still found openings downstairs and tagged Evloev with quick combinations, but the tide began to turn towards the Russian’s grappling.
The most significant moment of the bout came in the fourth round. After landing a second accidental groin strike, Evloev was docked a point by referee Marc Goddard. The deduction left Evloev in a precarious position on the scorecards and gave Murphy a potential route to a draw even in a losing round.
Rather than fade, Evloev responded with urgency. He leaned heavily on his wrestling, chaining takedown attempts and driving Murphy to the mat. From top position he delivered steady ground-and-pound and maintained control for long stretches, blunting Murphy’s offence and reclaiming momentum despite the lost point.
Going into the fifth, the fight appeared finely balanced. Both corners urged urgency, and Evloev again imposed his grappling. He secured multiple takedowns and spent much of the round in dominant positions, landing short strikes and preventing Murphy from building sustained offence on the feet.
Murphy refused to concede, working to stand, attempting submissions from his back and firing back with quick counters when space allowed. But the minutes spent underneath Evloev and the control time accumulated by the Russian proved decisive in the eyes of two judges.
The final tallies reflected the narrow margins. One judge saw the contest even at 47-47, with the point deduction erasing Evloev’s edge. The other two judges scored it 48-46 for Evloev, rewarding his pressure, grappling success in the final two rounds and overall control.
In his post-fight interview, Evloev reiterated his call for a crack at long-reigning featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. The Australian, 37, has previously spoken of wanting new opposition at 145lbs, and Evloev’s unbeaten record, ranking position and win over Murphy strengthen his claim.
For Murphy, the result ends his undefeated run but underlines his standing as a top contender. His composure under pressure, body work and sharp counter striking kept him competitive throughout against the division’s top-ranked challenger.
For Evloev, the victory on hostile territory, under the pressure of a de facto title eliminator and in the face of a costly point deduction, may be the final step needed to secure the long-pursued championship opportunity.
