2026 Australian Open Round 1 Recap

Round 1 of the Australian Open is set to conclude on Tuesday – as the action heats up down under in Australia.

The quest to become the 2026 Australian Open champion has begun as round 1 of the tournament is set to conclude on Tuesday with round 2 scheduled for Wednesday. With 2000 ATP points up for grabs for the winner of the tournament – the perennial challenges of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are favorites to make the final. Day 1 of the competition saw the big names progress to the next round and saw very few surprises. SuperSportBet recaps the round 1 action and what to expect in round 2.

Round 1 Recap

  • World number 1 Carlos Alcaraz cruised to victory in the first round as he beat out Adam Walton 6-3 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 in his quest for the Australian major. Alcaraz has won the French Open, US Open, Wimbledon however has not yet on the Australian Open

  • 2025 Australian Open finalist Alexander Zverev came from a set down to beat Canada's Gabriel Diallo in four sets
  • Two-time Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff who is chasing her maid Australian Open title eased to a 6-2 6-3 ⁠win over Kamilla Rakhimova.

Round 1 Remaining Games (Tuesday)

  • Serbian Novak Djokovic who the most Australian Open titles is chasing the elusive record breaking 25th career major begins his campaign against Spain’s Pedro Martinez
  • Defending champion Jannik Sinner will be in action on Tuesday the 20th of January against Hugo Gaston from France. The world number 2 is looking to win the Australian open for the third time in a row.
  • World number 9 Maddison Keys will begin her quest for the title on Tuesday when she takes on Oleksandra Oliynykova
  • Japanese womens player Naomi Osaka will also be in action on Tuesday against Antonia Ruzic.
