The Springboks claimed a record-breaking win in Wellington on Saturday to remain in the Rugby Championship title race while Argentina beat Australia in Sydney.
Following a 24-17 defeat to the All Blacks in Auckland, the Boks went into the second match of the Freedom Cup series with everything to prove.
Expectations were tempered after Rassie Erasmus named a much-changed side for the Test in Wellington – and the betting markets reflected the visitors’ status, with the Boks listed as 2.62 underdogs.
On the day, however, the Boks scored six tries to claim a 43-10 win – and hand the All Blacks their heaviest defeat in history.
Erasmus’ charges also managed to limit New Zealand to one try, and secure the try-scoring bonus point.
As a result, the Boks have retained the Freedom Cup title, and have moved ahead of the All Blacks’ in the Rugby Championship standings.
Meanwhile, the Wallabies finished the round at the top of the tournament log, despite losing 28-26 to Argentina in Sydney on Saturday.
The match ended on a controversial note, with the Wallabies awarded a try in spite of a forward pass in the buildup.
That late score ensured that the hosts banked two bonus points from the fixture – and finished the round one point ahead of the Boks on the log.
Like the Boks, the Pumas went into the fourth round clash as underdogs (2.50).
But in the end, the final scoreline in Sydney flattered the Wallabies.
The tournament will take a break this week, before resuming next weekend.
The All Blacks will host the Wallabies in Auckland on 27 September, while the Boks will play the Pumas in Durban later in the day.
Over in England, the Springbok Women showed some fight in the World Cup quarter-final against the New Zealand Black Ferns this past Saturday.
Swys de Bruin’s side – who started the playoff in Exeter as 51.00 underdogs – used their maul and scrum to rattle the New Zealanders in the first half, and the scores were level (10-10) at the break.
While the defending champions emerged with a comfortable 46-17 win, the Bok Women finished within the +38 handicap.
The Carling Cup semi-finals delivered a couple of more predictable results, with the hosts of both matches advancing to the final.
The Fidelity ADT Lions scored 10 tries in an emphatic 67-19 win against the Sanlam Boland Cavaliers in Johannesburg on Saturday, with winger Angelo Davids dotting down four times.
Over in the Northern Cape, Suzuki Griquas beat the Toyota Cheetahs XV 25-5 to secure their place in the domestic decider.
The Lions and Griquas will meet in the final in Johannesburg this weekend, while the Women’s World Cup will reach the semi-final stage.
