Defiant Wallabies Finish Lions Series On A High

by SuperSportBet

7 Aug 2025

The third and final Test between the Wallabies and Lions in Sydney was a closely contested affair.

The torrential conditions in the New South Wales capital served to stifle the attacking intentions of both teams, and there was a significant break after half-time, when lightning stopped play.

The Lions scored their first points of the match in the 61st minute, but could not replicate the heroics of the second Test in Melbourne – where they overturned an 18-point deficit to win 29-26 and clinch the series 2-0.

In the end, the Wallabies emerged with a 22-12 victory in Sydney, and the series finished 2-1 in the Lions’ favour.

All in all, it was a significant tour, with the Lions claiming their first Test series win since 2013, and the Wallabies avoiding a whitewash.

As it stands, the Springboks are the last team to win a series against the Lions – in 2021 and also in 2009. The Boks will host the Wallabies in the first two rounds of the Rugby Championship later this month.

Big Wins In Carling Currie Cup

Meanwhile, the second round of the Currie Cup was staged this past weekend, with all four home teams emerging with important bonus-point wins.

The Toyota Cheetahs rebounded from last week’s loss to the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers to secure a 42-25 victory against the Airlink Pumas in Bloemfontein on Friday.

On Saturday, the Lions strengthened their position in the Currie Cup standings when they thrashed DHL Western Province 40-19 in Johannesburg.

Hooker Jaco Visagie scored two of the Lions’ six tries, while the WP defence conceded 40 points for the second week in a row – and finished outside of the +18.5 handicap.

Up the road at Loftus Versfeld, the Bulls put the HollwyoodBets Sharks to the sword, with No 8 Jeandré Rudolph and centre Chris Smit scoring two tries apiece in the hosts’ 64-0 win. The Sharks failed to cover the handicap (+20.5)

The record-breaking winning margin at Loftus sees the Bulls finishing the second round of the Currie Cup at the top of the standings, and the Lions in second place.

On Sunday, Suzuki Griquas overcame a spirited Boland side to win 48-39 in Kimberley.

What's Next In The Currie Cup

The Currie Cup continues this weekend, with Griquas hosting WP in what will be a must-win clash in Kimberley on Friday.
The Bulls will attempt to bank their third-consecutive win of the campaign when they face the Pumas at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, while the Sharks will tackle the Cheetahs in Durban later that evening.
The Lions will head down to Wellington to play a resurgent Boland on Sunday afternoon.
