Sinner beat out rival and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in four sets in an entertaining finale.
With the new tennis era rivalry now between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, the former finally overcame the latter in a pulsating Grand Slam final – at the All-England Club. Sinner’s win at Wimbledon was his first triumph over Alcaraz in over 20 months and six attempts. The Italian showed composure, poise, and maturity by prevailing 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 & 6-4. Sinners Wimbledon win has now seen him win two majors in 2025 with the US Open still to come. Sinner also became the first Italian to win the coveted Wimbledon prize – further elevating his credentials as one of the modern tennis greats.
Jannik Sinner has had a roller coaster of a season in 2025. In the beginning of the year – the world number one claimed victory down under and won the Australian Open. Following his first grand slam title of the year – Sinner took a three-month ban imposed by the World Anti Doping Agency. Sinner twice tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid in 2024. While Sinner argued that he was “inadvertently contaminated by his physiotherapist” – some sections of the tennis fraternity questioned whether Sinner’s success was due to the banned substance.
After serving his ban – Sinner made it just in time for the Roland Garros – also known as the French Open. Sinner would make it all the way to the final where he and Alcaraz served one of the most entertaining games of tennis in recent history. The Italian would come short against the Spaniard with many questioning on whether Sinner could overcome his rival. But finally, after six attempts and 20 months Sinner beat Alcaraz. In just three hours and four minutes Sinner avenged his heartbreaking Roland Garros defeat by battling back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. With Grand Slam titles under his belt Sinner has now beaten Alcaraz in 5 ATP matches, while the Spaniard has won 8.
The final major of the year will be the upcoming US Open – taking place from the 24th of August to the 7th of September in New York, USA. Jannik Sinner goes into the US Open as the defending champions and will be looking to complete a hat-trick of Grand Slam titles in 2025. With just one Grand Slam remaining Sinner will be going into the tournament in America as the overwhelming favourite.
