Lebohang Maboe is “back home” after rejoining Kaizer Chiefs a few days ago, and he’s determined to repay the faith the club has shown in him.
Maboe became Chiefs’ tenth signing of the new season, joining players such as Siphesihle Ndlovu, Thabiso Monyane, Paseka Mako, Luke Baartman, Asanele Velebayi, and Etiosa Ighodaro.
His arrival was particularly special, as he was unveiled in front of more than 75,000 fans at FNB Stadium during half-time of the team’s goalless draw against his former club, Mamelodi Sundowns, in the Betway Premiership.
The 30-year-old finally made his long-awaited return to Amakhosi, having left the club early in his career to play for the now-defunct Mbombela United, Maritzburg United - who are now known as Durban City - and Sundowns, where he enjoyed an illustrious stint and won seven titles.
While Maboe is happy to be back in the gold and black colours of the club, he admitted the deal wasn’t straightforward from the beginning. That’s why he wants to show his gratitude to the club for their patience by delivering where it matters most: on the pitch.
“Once I knew I wasn’t going back to Sundowns, which was around June, that’s when the talks [to return to Chiefs] started,” Maboe said.
“But it was just unfortunate because I had to undergo shoulder surgery. Now that I am back home, all I’m looking forward to is repaying the faith they’ve shown in me and continuing to work hard.”
For the first time in years, Chiefs have been praised for signing depth rather than quantity, as many supporters believe their glory days are getting closer.
Coach Nasreddine Nabi and his staff have already unleashed some of the new faces, and it has paid off. Chiefs went into the FIFA break unbeaten in the league - with four wins and one draw - and are yet to concede a goal.
Amakhosi’s commercial and marketing director, Jessica Motaung, said it was crucial to back Nabi, as that is the only way he will be able to carry out his duties effectively.
“The club is committed to making sure we have the best players, regardless of who the coach is,” Motaung said on the sidelines of Chiefs’ 2025 Nedbank Cup Multipurpose Sports Court Handover at Phulong Secondary School in Kwa-Thema, Springs, this week.
“We are here to build a team that’s going to last for Kaizer Chiefs. We expect the coach to do his job, and we are giving him the tools to do it. We expect him to deliver.”
After ending their 10-year trophy drought by winning the Nedbank Cup last season, Chiefs are eager to challenge for every piece of silverware this campaign, including the CAF Confederation Cup.
They will begin their continental journey in Luanda, Angola, against Kabuscorp Sport Clube do Palanca, winners of the 2024/25 Angolan Cup. The first-leg fixtures are set for 19–21 September, with the return legs scheduled for 26–28 September.
“Every trophy on offer is important for us, and defending this [the Nedbank Cup] is definitely part of our plans,” Motaung said. “We want to compete for every trophy available.
“It’s also important for us to play in CAF competitions. We are excited to be back in the Confederation Cup, and we are calling on our supporters - both at home and across the continent - to rally behind the team and help us succeed.”
