San Antonio, Texas – Diego Lopes emerged victorious in a brutal, back-and-forth battle against Jean Silva at Saturday's Noche UFC event at the Frost Bank Center. The featherweight clash, which headlined the UFC's annual celebration of Mexican Independence Day, culminated in a TKO victory for Lopes at 4:48 of the second round.
Lopes (27-7) established his dominance early, utilising his superior grappling skills to take Silva (12-3) to the canvas. The Brazilian controlled the majority of the opening round from top position, raining down punches and elbows. Silva, known as "The Fighting Nerd," struggled to escape Lopes's relentless pressure, absorbing punishment throughout the frame.
However, the second round saw a dramatic shift in momentum. Silva came out with renewed vigour, taking the initiative and landing several significant strikes on the feet. He pursued Lopes with aggression, connecting with heavy punches and attempting a spinning back elbow on multiple occasions.
The intensity of the exchanges increased as both fighters traded blows in the centre of the Octagon. The pivotal moment arrived late in the round when Silva pressed forward, only to be caught by a perfectly timed spinning elbow from Lopes. The blow opened a significant cut on Silva, prompting Lopes to capitalise immediately. He swarmed his opponent, unleashing a barrage of punches that forced the referee to halt the contest with just 12 seconds remaining in the round.
With this win, Lopes reaffirmed his position as a top contender in the featherweight division. He previously challenged Alexander Volkanovski for the title at UFC 314 back in April of this year. Whilst Lopes came up short that night, losing by unanimous decision, he showcased his talent and cemented his place amongst the featherweight elite. His victory over Silva marks his second appearance at Noche UFC; Lopes beat Brian Ortega with a one-sided decision at 2024's Noche UFC pay-per-view at the Las Vegas Sphere.
The Noche UFC card delivered excitement from start to finish. In the co-main event, David Martínez secured a unanimous decision victory over Rob Font after three closely contested rounds. The judges scored the bout 29-28, 29-28, and 29-28, all in favour of Martínez.
Rafa Garcia also impressed, earning a TKO victory over Jared Gordon in the third round. Garcia overwhelmed Gordon with punches and elbows, forcing the stoppage at 2:27 of the round.
Kelvin Gastelum returned to the win column with a unanimous decision victory over Dustin Stoltzfus. The judges' scorecards read 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28, all in favour of Gastelum.
Alexander Hernandez defeated Carlos Diego Ferreira via TKO in the second round, landing a series of punches that brought the fight to an end at 3:46. Santiago Luna kicked off the main card with a highlight-reel knockout of Quang Le, finishing the fight with punches at 2:48 of the first round.
The Noche UFC event provided a memorable night of fights, capped off by the thrilling main event between Diego Lopes and Jean Silva.
