The 35-year-old goalkeeper returns for a second spell at Leipzig after leaving Sevilla when his contract expired. He has been signed to strengthen the goalkeeping department following Peter Gulacsi's move to Villarreal after 11 years at the Bundesliga club.
Nyland previously made three appearances for Leipzig during the 2022/23 season before joining Sevilla. He has also played in Germany with Ingolstadt and spent time in the Premier League with Aston Villa.
The move follows an impressive 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with Norway, where Nyland was one of the standout performers. He played a key role as Norway stunned Brazil to reach the quarter-finals, producing a series of important saves throughout the tournament.
Although Maarten Vandevoordt is expected to begin the season as Leipzig's first-choice goalkeeper, Nyland will provide experienced competition for the number one spot.
Leipzig confirmed that Nyland will join the squad for his first training session in Saalfelden on Tuesday morning.
Sporting managing director Marcel Schafer welcomed the goalkeeper back to the club and said his experience and character made him an ideal signing.
"With Orjan, we're gaining a very experienced goalkeeper whom we already know very well as a player and as a person," Schafer said.
"Even during his initial time with us, he demonstrated that he's an absolute team player, a reliable professional and always ready to take on responsibility."
