Thomas Tuchel: Giving Declan Rice England's vice-captaincy an 'obvious' decision

The decision comes ahead of Wednesday's international friendly against Costa Rica as the Three Lions continue their build-up towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Tuchel rewarding Rice following another impressive campaign at club level.

The 26-year-old played a central role in Arsenal's successful Premier League title-winning season, further enhancing his reputation as one of England's most influential players.

Rice was among a group of late arrivals at England's training base in Florida, linking up with the squad alongside Arsenal teammate Bukayo Saka. Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze and Chelsea winger Noni Madueke also joined the camp at the same time.

Since breaking into the senior international side in 2019, Rice has become a mainstay in England's midfield. He made his debut in a 5-0 triumph over Czechia during the European Championship qualifying campaign and has gone on to collect 72 caps for his country.

"We have the leadership group of five or six players, if you want to call them captains without the armband," Tuchel explained in his press conference on Tuesday.

"Declan is one of them and Harry [Kane] is one of them. These are the two guys with the armband. Harry is our captain, there is no doubt about that and Declan is our second captain.

"When Harry was not in camp and didn't play against Wales, we had the choice and it was a very quick one, and very obvious one, to give it to Declan.

"He's on the highest football IQ, he takes care about formation, he takes care about our structure and the adaptation.

"I think he has had an outstanding two seasons in his personal career with Arsenal. In the last two years, he has been one of the main players in Europe and in the Champions League.

"One of the very best midfielders in Europe at the moment, full of confidence and that's why he's my vice captain."
