Late penalty seals MTN8 glory for Sundowns, ending Orlando Pirates' reign

Pirates entered the contest hoping to secure an unprecedented fifth successive title, but Miguel Cardoso's side proved too strong for the Buccaneers, delivering a disciplined performance at the iconic 2010 FIFA World Cup venue.

Despite Pirates' energetic start, Sundowns struck first in the 11th minute. Aubrey Modiba's free-kick caused problems in the box before Thabang Matuludi collected the loose ball and backheeled it through Lebone Seema's legs. Teboho Mokoena was on hand to finish from close range.

Sipho Chaine produced four important saves before the interval to keep Pirates within reach, while Sundowns dictated proceedings through their tactical organisation and control of possession.

The Brazilians also restricted their opponents' usual midfield combinations, forcing them to search for openings out wide.

Pirates increased the pressure after the restart, with Ronwen Williams becoming central to Sundowns' efforts to preserve their advantage.

The goalkeeper made three crucial interventions in the second half, including a penalty save to deny Giamphani Lungu in the 61st minute.

Sundowns had an opportunity to settle the contest when Tashreeq Matthews carved through the Pirates defence and set up Brayan Leon, but the forward failed to capitalise. The encounter subsequently opened up, with both sides pushing forward in search of goals.

However, Sundowns ultimately secured the result through Iqraam Rayners, who converted a late penalty to establish the final 2-0 scoreline.

The triumph ended Pirates' four-year hold on the competition and denied Abdeslam Ouaddou's team the chance to achieve five consecutive MTN8 crowns.
