ATP 500 Tennis Heats Up in Doha & Rio

With the finals for both the Qatar Open and Rio Open set to take place this coming Saturday (22nd February) and Sunday (23rd February) respectively, the knockout stages for both tournaments has already served up exciting tennis, upsets, and drama. The two tournaments form part of the ATP 500 which are a series of men’s tennis tournaments that take place around the world. ATP 500 tournaments are the fourth highest level of tennis tournaments after the Grand Slams (Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbeldon & US Open), ATP Finals and ATP Masters 1000. In total there are 16 ATP 500 tournaments held across the year in various locations, with the winner of any ATP 500 tournament - receiving 500 points towards their ATP tennis ranking.

Qatar Open:

The Qatar open, which is played on a hard surface, is one of two ATP Tour events held in the Middle East. The tournament which has seen the worlds best players over the years participate in the competion and go on to win it, including Rodger Federer, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafeal Nadal.

For the 2025 edition, Carlos Alcaraz – who ranked as the top seed is the favourite to win – following the shock exit of multiple winner Novak Djokovic. Djokovic who participated in the first round of the Qatar Open – was eliminated after he lost 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 to Matteo Berrettini.

Rio Open:

The Rio Open, held in Brazil, is played across a clay surface since its inaugural edition in 2014. The 'King of Clay' - Rafael Nadal won the maiden tournament in 2014 - while Spaniards Carlos Alcaraz was crowned the youngest ATP 500 champion when he won the tournament in 2022.

This year’s edition sees top seed Alexander Zverev as the outright favourite to win the tournament following his early exit at the Argentina Open.
