Pape Cheikh Diop vows comeback after losing everything to shocking betrayal

Now 28, Diop has opened up about the emotional and financial devastation he suffered after being deceived by someone he trusted completely - an ordeal he describes as "a nightmare I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies."

Speaking to Spanish outlet AS as reported by Mozzart Sport Kenya, the midfielder shared cautious optimism as he begins again with Promises E.D.F., a modest club competing in Spain's lower tiers. For Diop, even the simplest moments now carry meaning.

"I'm happy now, and I can finally smile. I've been away from football for a while, and the feeling of touching the ball again is incredible," he said

Once considered a rising star, Diop's journey included spells with Celta Vigo, Olympique Lyonnais, Aris Thessaloniki and Elche CF. He also featured for Spain's Under-19 side that won the UEFA European Under-19 Championship and earned senior caps for Senegal - credentials that underlined his immense potential.

However, his trajectory took a devastating turn three years ago during his time in Greece.

"Someone I trusted - like a father to me - stole everything," Diop revealed. "He took my houses, my cars and all my money. I was left with nothing."

The betrayal was made worse by the level of trust involved. Diop had granted the individual power of attorney, allowing him full control over his affairs - a decision he now describes as a "huge mistake."

The aftermath left him emotionally shattered and financially drained, forcing him to step away from football while trying to rebuild his life in Senegal.

"I had saved millions, and in a moment, it was all gone," he added

Support from figures within the game, including his agent Eric Alonso, proved crucial in helping him get back on his feet. Now, despite the scars, Diop is determined to rise again.

"I will return to my best level. I'm mentally stronger than ever - and this is just the beginning of my comeback," he concluded.
