Gavin Hunt braces for relegation battles as Stellenbosch chase Top-8 finish

The Maroons are preparing for a crucial clash against Durban City at Chatsworth Stadium on Friday, before hosting Orbit College and then travelling to face Marumo Gallants in their final stretch of the season.

Hunt believes those fixtures present a unique challenge, with survival-hungry teams often proving the most dangerous.

"Besides City, it's all teams at the bottom, so it's going to be tough because obviously they'll be fighting for their lives there," said Hunt.

Stellenbosch head into the encounter on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Orlando Pirates in a Betway Premiership midweek clash, but Hunt has remained encouraged by his team's progress - particularly following their January reinforcements.

"We've done well with the players we have to get where we are. It's been an absolute miracle what we've achieved since January. Right now, we can't compete with these teams, but next year, for sure. There are a lot of players who shouldn't be here," he added.

Currently sitting 10th on the table with 32 points, Stellenbosch are still in contention for a top-eight finish, which would secure MTN8 qualification next season.

However, they face a stern test against a confident Durban City side, recently crowned Nedbank Cup champions and coming off a 2-2 draw with Siwelele.

Under the guidance of coach Pitso Dladla, Durban City occupy seventh place with 37 points and are equally determined to cement their place in the top half.
