The Premier League dominated the market, accounting for roughly 55% of the total after English clubs spent a record £3.48 billion. Driven by huge domestic TV revenues, Premier League sides outspent La Liga, the Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 combined by nearly £1 billion, with a frantic £475m spent on deadline day.
Manchester City topped the spending table after committing around £458m to a major squad overhaul under Enzo Maresca. The headline deal was the £125m signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea just minutes before the window shut, while City also paid £116m for Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and £86m for 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille as well as £65m for Iliman Ndiaye from Everton.
Chelsea were similarly aggressive, spending heavily to back new manager Xabi Alonso. Morgan Rogers arrived from Aston Villa for £117m, while Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix cost £51m. The Blues also signed goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa for £7.5m and took Alejandro Garnacho on loan. Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson joined from Brentford on a free transfer.
Tottenham, meanwhile, flexed their financial muscle as the North Londoners committed around £303m to a sweeping rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi. Spurs broke their club record with the £100m signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle and also paid £85m for Savio from Man City and £52m for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke. Meanwhile, Mykhailo Mudryk arrived from Chelsea on loan.
Premier League champions Arsenal strengthened their spine with Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle for £75m and Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £55m. The Gunners also made Piero Hincapie's move from Bayer Leverkusen permanent for £34.5m, while departures included Gabriel Jesus to Barcelona for £8.6m.
Liverpool focused their spending on attack, completing the £123m move for Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain. The French forward joins a frontline featuring Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo, while the Reds also allowed Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate to leave on free transfers.
Manchester United spent £70m on Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, adding energy and ball-winning ability to the centre of the pitch, while Youri Tielemans arrived from Villa for £35m. The Red Devils also invested £50m in Andrey Santos from Chelsea, further reshaping their midfield options ahead of the new campaign. On the outgoing side, Casemiro left for Inter Miami on a free transfer.
Aston Villa underwent major turnover after selling several key players including Rogers (Chelsea), Konsa (Arsenal) and Ollie Watkins, who departed for Al Hilal for £50m. Villa reinvested with Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea for £65m, Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for £59.5m, Ibrahim Mbaye from PSG for £47m and Joao Gomes from Wolves for £38m. Leon Goretzka also arrived from Bayern Munich on a free transfer.
Newcastle strengthened their squad with Nico Gonzalez arriving for £50m from Man City as one of the club's headline additions. The Magpies also completed the £51m signing of Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille, adding further attacking quality to their options.
Meanwhile, Jack Grealish joined Everton on loan from Man City for a second successive season.
In Spain's La Liga, Real Madrid won the race for Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande's signature, who they signed for £105m, while also bringing in Marc Cucurella from Chelsea for £51.8m. Fierce rivals Barcelona produced one of the window's biggest shocks by signing Rodri from Man City for £65.4m, while Anthony Gordon also moved to the Catalan club for £69.3m. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid signed Cristiano Romero from Tottenham for £34m.
In the German Bundesliga, RB Leipzig brought in Marc Guiu from Chelsea for £14.6m, while Hoffenheim paid £42m for Bazoumana Toure. Borussia Dortmund also secured Arsenal teenager Ethan Nwaneri on loan, adding another highly rated young player to their squad.
In Italy, the marquee signing was AC Milan's capture of Goncalo Ramos for £61.6m from PSG. Napoli paid £38m for Rasmus Hojlund, while Juventus took Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade and Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr on loan. Inter Milan strengthened their defence with Tottenham's Djed Spence for £30m, and Roma added further attacking depth with a £21.6m deal for Netherlands frontman Donyell Malen.
Ligue 1's biggest activity was focused around back-to-back European champions PSG, who generated significant funds from the departures of Barcola and Mbaye. The French champions also signed Ferran Torres from Barcelona for £41.4m and Lucas Digne from Villa for £8.5m.
The curtain falls on another extraordinary transfer window, one that delivered no shortage of drama along the way. Big-money moves, unexpected bargains, late surprises and deals that seemed dead before being revived kept the football world guessing right up to the final hours.
